In this project, I aim to explore the essence of “effort” based on a conversation I had with my mum. She asked me, “Can you honestly say you’ve done your best?” This question made me reflect on whether mindlessly running and striving like the Red Queen Effect from Alice Through the Looking Glass, truly constitutes “effort.” In society, the pressure to relentlessly pursue what others define as success—what they call “Noooooryeok” in Korean—often feels like a necessity for survival and progress. Yet, I realized that merely running endlessly to meet external expectations wouldn’t lead to fulfillment unless it aligned with my own aspirations.
The goal of this project is to visually depict the concept of “true effort” embodied by the Korean term “Noooryeok.” While the artwork employs Korean characters, its movements and sounds convey universal meaning, ensuring clear communication regardless of language barriers. For me, “true effort” isn’t about being swept along by external pressures, but rather about discovering one’s own purpose in life and striving towards personal growth and fulfillment. What about you? Have you identified your true effort, or are you pursuing your version of “Noooooryeok”?
